May 2021 Import Highlights

Monthly data on the origins of crude oil imports in May 2021 show that one country, Canada, exported more than one million barrels per day to the United States (see table below). The top five exporting countries accounted for 84% of United States crude oil imports in May while the top ten sources accounted for approximately 95% of all U.S. crude oil imports. The top five sources of U.S. crude oil imports for May were Canada (3.5 million b/d), Mexico (600,000 b/d), Russia (277,000 b/d), Saudi Arabia (255,000 b/d), and Colombia (206,000 b/d). The remaining top ten sources, in order, were Ecuador (181,000 b/d), Iraq (162,000 b/d), Libya (117,000 b/d), Nigeria (104,000 b/d), and Guyana ( 97,000 b/d). Total crude oil imports averaged 5.8 million b/d in May, which was an increase of 9,000 b/d from imports during April 2021.

Canada remained the largest exporter of total petroleum to the United States in May; exporting 4.1 million b/d. The second largest exporter of total petroleum was Russia with 844,000 b/d.
